More About Behind:
Hal has had enough of his youngest son’s sulking; Louis isn’t pulling his weight around the family farm and something has to give. Louis’ older brother, Graham, snidely remarks that Louis is only upset because the family is eating his favourite cow. His mother, Maggie, tries to explain that eating the cows is just the natural order. Hal says they’re just dumb animals.
Louis defiantly states that his cow wasn’t just a dumb animal and that she knew his name. That she and the other cows can show emotion; that they can think; that they can talk.
Dinner comes to a screeching halt. Everyone looks to Hal. He quietly acquiesces; it’s time for Louis to learn the truth.
Hal sits Louis down and explains that yes, the cows can think and talk. It’s something everyone learns around Louis’ age. And, unfortunately, this is just the way the world is now. There aren’t any other animals left, they all died during the Gray Out. It’s just them and the cows.
Louis, sad and confused, asks to be excused. After he’s left the table, Maggie notices something outside: a Woman. She stands, naked, idly shifting her significant weight and staring off into nothingness.
